Founded in 1737, the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is a research university of international renown with strong focuses in research-led teaching. The University is distinguished by the outstanding quality in its priority research areas, by its remarkable diversity of disciplines, especially in the humanities. The name of Göttingen is associated with more than 40 Nobel Prize winners.

In 2007, the University achieved success in the Initiative of Excellence of the German Federal and State Governments. This distinguishes Göttingen as one of nine German universities officially rated as holding the potential for global visibility and a place amongst the foremost institutions of higher education. The University has active agreements with higher education institutions in more than 70 countries and has been involved in a huge number of projects funded by the European Commission.
