About us

The Erasmus Mundus Master Programme "Euroculture – Europe in the wider world" is a unique, interdisciplinary and interuniversitary Master of Arts programme of 120 ECTS (four semesters). It is recognised by the European Commission as an "Erasmus Mundus Master of Excellence".

Aims

The MA Programme “Euroculture, Europe in the Wider World” aims to prepare graduates from all over the world for professions and research areas in which knowledge of present Europe and the European Union institutions are of relevance. The focus of the programme is on cultural and social developments, the political process of European integration, values, citizenship and cultural identity. The programme teaches students the methods and skills required to identify the European dimensions of social problems, to collect and process relevant information of European institutions and organisations and to reflect on the cultural aspects and factors that play a role in the process of European identity formation and European integration.

The programme's core questions are:

  • Whether, to what extent and in which forms does a common and unique European culture exist and how is it related to other regional or non-European cultures?
  • What is the mutual impact of political and social processes on European culture?
  • How is Europe and how are cultural transformations perceived within and from the outside?
Consortium

The four semester MA programme is offered by a consortium of eight European universities. These universities are also partnered with four non-European universities. The consortium coordinating university is the University of Groningen.

Mandatory mobility between the different consortium universities is a crucial element of the Euroculture programme. Through its international exchange, the Euroculture programme offers students the chance to gain valuable academic and personal experience with divergent cultural contexts, languages, perspectives and socio-cultural practices.

Admission

The programme (120 ECTS) is open to students who have successfully completed a university BA programme in the fields of Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences. The language of instruction is English.

'The interdisciplinary focus of the programme was a very important aspect for me. It became possible for me to do a PhD in Stockholm, because Euroculture allowed me to continue in a different direction. Now I am doing my PhD in history, while I did an undergraduate in translation.'
